Equipment Overview

The CAT 785 is a rigid dump truck built for high-volume ore and overburden hauling in large-scale open-pit mining, Caterpillar’s first entry into the mining-truck class and still one of its most widely used models. It carries a 147-tonne nominal rated payload and a 110 m³ heaped body, delivering 1,193 kW of gross power, suited to major open-pit coal, iron ore, and hard-rock mining operations where high-capacity wheel loaders or hydraulic shovels keep loading cycles fast.

Power comes from a Cat 3512E 12-cylinder diesel engine producing 1,193 kW (1,600 hp) gross and 1,125 kW (1,509 hp) net, with a 23% net torque rise that helps maintain pulling power on steep grades and rough ground. A Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V version is available for regulated markets, alongside an LRC engine for less-regulated countries. A six-speed automatic powershift transmission drives the rear axle, coordinated by Caterpillar’s APECS control strategy, with an enhanced traction control system to manage wheel slip.
