Smooth Drum Rollers

Smooth drum roller is a road compactor with large, smooth, cylindrical steel drum used to compact asphalt, gravel, or soil surfaces. The flat surface is formed by applying equal pressure from the smooth drum, which will flatten and densify the material; it is commonly used for road, parking lot, and other paved surfaces finishing work. Lastly, smooth drum rollers are extensively used in the final part of compaction of asphalt paving projects, as they provide a smooth, even surface without disturbing the material below. They are also employed in general construction for base layers and subgrades compaction.

Smooth Drum Roller Hire Guides

Check out our articles on smooth drum rollers, including how these machines are used to compact asphalt and other materials down during road building and paving work.
Compaction rollers press soil, gravel and asphalt into a dense, stable base before the next stage of a build goes in. Single drum and double drum rollers, as Quotor’s guide explains, are the two road roller configurations you will see most often on an Australian site, and the difference between them starts with drum count and placement. A single drum roller delivers its compactive force through one large steel drum at the front, backed by tyres at the rear for steering and traction. A double drum roller compacts through two steel drums, one at each end of the frame, so every pass works the full width of the machine in steel rather than half steel and half rubber. That layout is what drives almost everything else covered below, from the ground each machine handles best to the finish it leaves.

Choose the Roller for Your Job

From small site work to large-scale earthmoving. Select the category that fits your job.

Smooth Drum Rollers

Those drum rollers are designed for flattening and compacting asphalt and prepare granular soils such as gravel.

Padfoot Rollers

Used for the compaction of cohesive and mixed soils, with features like tapered pads for improved soil stability.

Double Drum Rollers

These roller are perfect for large roadworks and asphalt projects, offering double the efficiency of the conventional single-drum roller.

Multi Tyre Rollers

Utilize air filled tires that provide even pressure, ideal for surface finishing and asphalt sealing.

Trench Rollers

These are remote-controlled compact rollers designed for trench work, foundations, and confined spaces where precision is required.

Combination Rollers

A flexible machine with both a smooth drum and pneumatic tyres for various compaction applications.

3 Point Rollers

Heavy-duty machines with three metal drums, used mainly in road construction for compaction of large areas of soil, gravel, and asphalt.

Soil Compactors

A specialised piece of earthmoving machinery for heavy-duty compacting operations.
