A long reach excavator, basically a super-sized, long-armed excavator, is a specially kitted out version of your standard excavator – extended boom and arm, the lot – allowing it to get the job done at a whole lot greater distance and digging depths, than your average excavator can manage. They get a fair bit of use for dredging waterways, keeping rivers and canals in a healthy state, trimming slopes, building / repairing embankments, demolition & deep excavation where access isn’t exactly easy or the ground is unstable. Long reach excavators are designed for length and accuracy rather than just breaking stuff apart, so they’re best suited to things in lighter materials or precise excavation work. They end up being able to get the job done in a lot less moves, which just improves the whole safety, efficiency & productivity on some of those larger, complicated, or really tough to get to sites.
